A mobile POS system combines functions of a POS system (such as a touchscreen and built-in readers and printers) with the portability and user-friendliness of a smartphone reader.
Mobile POS systems are a good choice for businesses on the go and those that don’t have a lot of space for a full POS system.
In this review, we’ll focus on the A920 option. If you’re looking for readers that attach to smartphones to accept credit cards, check out our Vital Mobile readers review.
The A920 is a PAX credit card machine and the option TSYS offers for a handheld terminal. It’s perfect for businesses that want something more robust than a smartphone reader, but still offers portability due to its small size and wifi capabilities.
The A920 accepts magnetic stripe cards, EMV chip cards, and contactless payment such as Apple Pay.
It’s PCI compliant, boasts a long battery life, and runs on the Android platform. The machine features a 5” touchscreen and has a built-in thermal printer. It also comes with a charging dock.
As a mobile POS, the A920 includes essential functions of both a POS system and a mobile reader. The A920 utilizes the same app as the smartphone readers, providing a range of sales capabilities, while also providing a larger screen and a built-in printer to increase the functionality compared to a smartphone. The built-in camera allows for easy barcode scanning, speeding up the process of ringing up individual items.
For payment functions, offers the ability to accept cards by swiping or keying, allows you to configure tax rates, and can be set to permit gratuities at the time of sale.
The Payment Acceptance app offers a handy function for adding inventory and sorting it into categories for ease of locating items. You can set the category names to reflect the categories for your particular business, assign items to categories, and search by item.
You’ll also have access to daily sales reports, which provide insight into important metrics including popular sales times, taxes, tips, and any discounts applied.
At the time of this review, the TSYS Vital line (including the A920) is very new, and TSYS is still adding features and making changes to the options. As new features become available, we’ll continue to update this profile. Check back often for more details, or let us know if you’ve used the A920 in the reviews tab in this profile.
The cost for the A920 varies depending on where you purchase it. We suggest purchasing the machine from the credit card processor with whom you intend to process so that it will arrive ready to go and you can ensure compatibility with the processor.
The A920 will cost a few hundred dollars. Businesses that choose a processor and equipment through CardFellow pay at or close to cost for equipment, ensuring the best deals.
In order to accept cards using the A920 mobile POS system, you’ll need the device itself, the mobile app, and a merchant account with a compatible credit card processor. As the Vital A920 is a TSYS product, that means using a TSYS-compatible processor. As one of the largest processors in the country, TSYS has many “resellers” that can offer its equipment, meaning you’ll have plenty of choices.
