Expert Contributors:

The Verifone VX 510 is a sleek, compact countertop payment terminal with multiple connection options. The terminal can connect securely via traditional dialup, high-speed Ethernet, or GPRS wireless. Boasting transaction processing speeds as fast as a few seconds and a user-friendly ATM-style interface, the terminal can accept traditional credit and debit cards. Additionally, merchants can accept EBT, loyalty, and gift cards. With optional peripherals, the VX 510 can also accept checks, EMV chip cards, and contactless forms of payment.

In addition to processing and authorizing sales, merchants can process refunds, voids, and returns. The terminal also offers the option of an offline or "store and forward" mode for accepting payments when a connection is not available. Offline transactions can be authorized and approved later when a connection is available.

The VX 510 offers easy manual batch settlement closing directly from the terminal, making end-of-day functions easier.

To assist merchants with all aspects of business, the Verifone VX 510 also provides comprehensive reporting options. Merchants can run reports to show details of every transaction in the current batch, view totals by card, run reports by clerk, and more.

Security
The Verifone VX 510 offers a range of security features, including VeriShield file authentication, PCI PED approval for debit payments, 3DES encryption, and EMV Level 1 and 2 approvals. The terminal also utilizes industry-standard Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption.

Features
The Verifone VX 510 terminal combines affordability with helpful features needed in today's businesses. The terminal is available in versions with different connection options, including dialup, Ethernet, and wireless. All versions feature ergonomic keys, a backlit screen, a built-in printer, and connection ability for optional peripherals.

Connectivity and Communication
The Verifone VX 510 is available with several connectivity options, including dialup, Ethernet, and GPRS wireless. Dialup is also usable as a backup in case of connection problems with other options. The terminal has 2 serial ports for connecting peripherals, and an Ethernet port.

Display
The large display screen is backlit for high visibility. 128 x 64 pixel LCD allows up to 8 lines x 21 characters.

Keypad
The integrated PIN pad features ergonomic keys for easy and accurate number entry. The terminal has 12 alphanumeric keys, 8 soft function keys, and 4 screen addressing keys.

Size
The compact VX 510 is 8" L x 4" W x 2.8" H and weighs 1.1 lbs.

Memory
The Verifone VX 510 has several memory options. Terminals include either 6MB (4MB of flash memory and 2MB SRAM) or 12MB (8MB of flash memory and 4MB SRAM.) The dial-up only option includes 3MB of memory.

Printer
The VX 510 has an integrated high-speed thermal printer for fast receipt printing at 18 lines per second. Drop-in paper loading with standard 58mm rolls makes changing the paper easy and helps limit jams. Printer includes graphics capabilities and a choice of 32 or 42 columns.

Peripherals
Merchants can increase the functionality of the Verifone VX 510 by adding optional peripherals, including check readers and contactless readers. Title: Not bad

Comment:

The VX 510 is small and portable, and can accept NFC contactless technologies with optional accessories. (At extra cost.) If you want the bells and whistles it might be worth the upgrade to a VX 520 or higher with more payment types built-in, but this is a good basic machine.
