Expert Contributors:

ProCharge’s mobile card reader accepts credit, debit, and gift card payments wherever you are. If you’re in a business that needs to be able to take payments at clients’ homes, fairs, or other job sites, mobile processing enables that. The card reader and the mobile app are both free of charge, though there’s still a cost to each card transaction. If you’re looking for a mobile processing solution, here’s what you need to know about ProCharge Mobile.

Note that in order to use ProCharge Mobile, you’ll need to set up a merchant account with ProCharge.

Features

ProCharge Mobile offers all the basic payment functions available from mobile POS solutions, including card acceptance, an option to record cash transactions with the app, the ability to process refunds or void transactions, add taxes, and enable customers to include a tip with a purchase. Additionally, you can capture signatures at the time of sale, and email receipts to customers.

On the business management side, ProCharge boasts next day funding and the ability to connect multiple card readers to one merchant account for easy reporting and reconciliation. It also offers QuickBooks integration and can sync with other ProCharge apps.

Hardware and Accessories

ProCharge’s card reader is free of charge. It accepts magnetic stripe credit cards, debit cards, and gift cards. The card reader is not EMV chip card compatible, meaning that if you take a chip credit card from a customer and run it as a magstripe card, you’ll be liable for fraudulent transactions that occur. If you’re new to mobile processing, it’s best to choose a chip-capable reader from the start.

The reader doesn’t accept NFC (contactless) payments like Apple Pay either, so if that’s important to you or your customers, you’ll need to look for a different reader.

ProCharge’s mobile readers are compatible with both Android and Apple devices.

If you don’t want to mail receipts (or your customers prefer printed copies) ProCharge Mobile is compatible with portable printers.

Security

ProCharge is PCI compliant. Neither the app nor the card reader stores any sensitive customer data on your phone. ProCharge encrypts all data so that no one else will be able to see it during transmission.

Reporting

You shouldn’t have to wait to see vital business data. ProCharge offers real time reporting within its app. You can see transactions as they take place, batch deposit reports, and account statements.

Pricing

As mentioned, the payment app and the credit card swiper are available free of charge, but you’ll need to pay for transactions. Additionally, monthly fees or other fees may apply. ProCharge doesn’t specify the actual pricing on its website.

Title: limited processor and no chip card options

Comment:

This reader can’t take the new EMV chip credit cards, and you have to use ProCharge for processing. Might be worth shopping around for a chip-capable reader.
