Quetzal Review

POS Systems

Quetzals are birds. We didn’t know that, either. But the Quetzal POS system features a bird in its logo, and google (plus a livechat with the company) confirms that a quetzal is a brightly-colored bird native to the South American rainforest. That’s not particularly relevant to point of sale systems, but gives you some insight into the company culture (bright and quirky) and explains the slightly odd company name.

What about the system itself, though? Firstly, the software is particularly geared for clothing and shoe retailers. It’s’a full-featured iPad solution that offers options for payment acceptance, inventory management, and robust reporting, with management for up to 10 locations. Quetzal offers 9 language options and can be updated at any time. Read on for the full details to determine if it’s right for your business.

Accepting Payments with Quetzal

Using the Quetzal POS system, you can accept traditional credit cards (including MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover), debit cards, gift cards, NFC payments, and chip credit cards. Cards can be swiped or manually entered, and onscreen signature capture is also available.

To take credit and debit cards, you’ll need a merchant account with a compatible credit card processor. Fortunately, Quetzal isn’t a proprietary system, meaning you’re not locked in to one processor. Quetzal is compatible with Moneris Solutions, Vantiv Integrated Payments (formerly Mercury), Velocity, and more.

Other Register Functions
In addition to accepting payments, you can process refunds, return items to stock, apply discounts, create tax exemptions, and more. Quetzal also provides the option to split payment across multiple payment types for customers that want to pay with different cards or split between cash and a card. At the conclusion of a transaction, you can provide either printed or digital receipts for your customer’s convenience. Receipts are customizable with your business logo and a tailored footer message.

It also features an offline mode for accepting payments even when a connection isn’t available. Actions performed while offline sync automatically when a connection becomes available.

Quetzal Features

The Quetzal POS has multiple features that retailers will appreciate, including customer management, reporting, and security.

Customer Management
It’s important to know what your customers are interested in. Quetzal also offers customer management by creating unique customer accounts containing contact info, transaction data, tailored avatars, and more. You can easily see what customers have purchased in the past, create custom marketing campaigns, and more.

Reports
Quetzal provides an on-screen sales goal, showing sales for your business’s best day compared with current day’s sales to encourage growth. Additionally, a variety of reports are available, including reports by staff member to show how your employees perform and help you reward top selling employees. As mentioned above, Quetzal offers customer tracking, giving important insights such as favorite colors and sizes, transaction totals, and more. Reports can be seamlessly integrated into Numbers, Apple’s spreadsheet, on the iPad. Many reports can be viewed in a variety of ways, including spreadsheet and graph formats, with bar graphs, line graphs, and more.

Security
Quetzal offers email and PIN authentication for users, and features an auto-lock after a period of inactivity, requiring re-signing in.

Equipment

Quetzal is designed and optimized for the iPad but can also be accessed from a computer with an internet browser. Existing mobile devices can also be linked up to use as a customer-facing display, and items can be scanned using built-in cameras.

If you need equipment, hardware bundles may be available. Hardware bundles include an iPad stand, receipt printer, barcode scanner, cash drawer, and label printer. Optionally, you can add accessories like Bluetooth hand scanners, swiped card readers, and more.

Quetzal Pricing

Note that these prices are the costs for the Quetzal POS software, and do not include costs for accepting credit cards. Those fees will be set by the processing company that you work with.

As of 2016, Quetzal offers options for monthly and annual charges, however, there is no discount for paying annually. Software is $82.50 per month, per location. (Annually, $990.) Integrating an online store (through Shopify) is an additional $50 set up plus $9/month for ecommerce. Optional extended set up/training is a one-time $250 fee.
