Clover Mobile POS Review

POS Systems

The Clover Mobile POS system is a portable card terminal designed to blend the features of mobility with the features of a full-fledged point-of-sale system. A sleek, brushed aluminum casing with white glass details, Clover Mobile looks nice and fits with almost all decor.

The Clover mobile POS is no longer sold or supported. This artile has been left online for reference only.

Clover Mobile POS Features

The Clover Mobile POS allows acceptance of multiple types of cards, including traditional credit, PIN-based and signature-based debit, EMV chip cards, and contactless technologies, including Apple Pay. A barcode scanner and front-facing camera enhance the functionality by allowing quick scanning without the need for additional equipment.

The Clover App Market is compatible with the Clover Mobile POS system, allowing businesses to add relevant apps to the Clover Mobile. Examples of apps include gift and loyalty card services, customer surveys, coupon programs, sales tax calculators, bar tab authorization, employee message system, and more.

Clover Mobile also has an optional dock for stationing the machine at a set location. Clover Mobile processes payments through First Data, one of the nation’s largest payment processors, and can be used with any processor that utilizes the First Data platform. Clover Mobile is a cloud-based system, allowing businesses to manage information remotely from an internet-connected device.

Clover Mobile states that it was specifically designed for food trucks, restaurants that offer tableside payment, mobile service professionals such as landscapers or plumbers, retailers who offer "line-busting" services or who do their own inventory scanning, and businesses that frequently process payments outside of a traditional environment, such as at tradeshows or fairs.

Security

The Clover Mobile is PCI complaint, helping prevent unwanted security problems. It’s worth nothing that Clover POS systems are required to use First Data’s TransArmor security suite, which is an additional monthly fee.

The Clover Mobile POS system offers a choice between wireless or wireless/3G connectivity, with a 7" screen, and built-in rechargeable battery. I bought the Clover Mobile in Jan. 2016. It immediately would not hold a charge and they replaced it. Fast forward 9 months later and the replacement will not hold a charge. They are sending a replacement. But they made me buy a new charger for $40 before sending a replacement. My warranty will be up in January and I'm scared to death that it will stop charging again. I bought it ourtright and am thinking I have no recourse after January. Do not buy this junk. Bad for business.

We have purchased the Clover mobile through our Suntrust bank branch and were very excited about the capabilities. It is a nice unit except for one major problem. In 6 months we have been sent 6 replacement devices because a bug causes all debit entries to be ran as credit entries. Well after the second device, I started wondering if this is some kind of procedure put into place by First Data. Their credit card rates are higher, but they sell you on the fact that all debit transactions are free. Which is great, if their equipment didn't disable debit transactions every 4 weeks. This has cost us a few hundred dollars per month on credit card fees that should have been run as debit. The equipment is cool and fast, but that debit scam is pretty sinister.

The Clover Mobile POS system gives you portability, but there are some downsides. Clover machines can't be reprogrammed if you switch processors, and to use a Clover, you have to purchase TransArmor security at an additional monthly cost.
