AnywhereCommerce Rambler 3.0 Review

Smartphone/Tablet

AnywhereCommerce’s Rambler 3.0 is a headphone jack credit card reader that lets you accept magnetic stripe cards. The reader cannot accept EMV chip cards or NFC (contactless) payments.

If you need to take those forms of payment, you’ll have to check out other options. AnywhereCommerce has an extensive line of readers, currently offering 6 different models. This quick reference chart gives an at-a-glance view of which readers take which payment types.

AnywhereCommerce card readers

It’s worth repeating that as of October 2015, businesses in the United States must have EMV chip card capable equipment when taking credit cards or else they’ll be liable for fraudulent transactions. It’s still possible to obtain and use the Rambler 3.0, but if you haven’t purchased a reader yet, it may be in your best interest to look at one of the EMV-capable options instead.

Rambler 3.0 Features

AnywhereCommerce’s payment app for use with the Rambler 3.0 features basic payment processing functions, including signature capture, automatic tax calculations, and refund capabilities. Additionally, you can enable gratuities to allow your customers to add tips at the point of sale. You’ll have a choice of how to provide receipts; you can email customers or send text message receipts. A very basic inventory management system is also available to allow you to track stock.

Hardware and Lifespan

You can use the Rambler 3.0 with a wide variety of devices. It’s compatible with Apple, Android, Blackberry, and Windows systems.

The Rambler itself is 0.7 x 1.7 x 1.8 inches and weighs 20 grams. Like other popular mobile readers, it connects to your mobile device through your audio jack. Flexible grips ensure the Rambler 3.0 stays connected, helping to eliminate wobble.

This card reader has dual strips to read magnetic stripe cards. It runs on an internal lithium battery, and doesn’t draw power from your mobile device.

The Rambler 3.0’s life cycle is about 40,000 recharge cycles, and it comes with a six month warranty that covers manufacturer defects.

Security

The Rambler 3.0 is PCI compliant and encrypted. In addition, it doesn’t store credit card information, and you don’t have to worry about credit card information being stored on your mobile device, either.

Reporting

AnywhereCommerce’s website says that its app provides integrated reporting, although it doesn’t specify what kind of reports you can generate.

Pricing

By using the Rambler to process swiped-card transactions, you may be eligible for lower transaction rates than manually entered payments. The actual costs will be determined by the credit card processing company that you choose.

The cost for the reader itself is not set by AnywhereCommerce – the price will vary depending on where you purchase the reader.

TSYS Merchant Solutions answer:

Please reference your processing partner to see if they have any bluetooth printers compatible to the rambler.?

Thanks
Team TSYS

PayHub Payments answer:

The?AnywhereCommerce Rambler 3.0 is not able to utilize a printer. ?That mobile solution utilizes emailed receipts and features a provision for customers to sign on the screen. ?If a printer is required I would recommend the Dejavoo Z9 wireless terminal or the Clover Mobile with the optional?bluetooth printer.

Didn't even get it when they said I would, after canceling it. They decided to send it anyways! And customer service is the worse! Very rude! And pushy. I'll be using square! For sure!! Was forced to put a star they don't deserve!!

from Edward, on Apr 20, 2016

We have 3 of them and found that the Rambler loses connectivity with the app very often forcing us to pull/push the device after almost every use. It takes time for the app to recognize the unit causing delays with customers.

The salesman are a BIG LIAR. He offered me 2% flat rate plus $0.08 per transaction and on my first statement they charge me 5%. Don't thrust on this guy.

This Rambler is worthless. It's antiquated capabilities are better served for a headphone jack plug!
